Im on my second lot of antibiotics with a Chest infection that just wont leave me in peace. The Mbuna havent had a tank clear-up for 2 weeks so it is looking a bit crappy and the poor catcish are having to sift poop to get to food.

I cant lift lots of buckets of water or stones as I am getting out of breath easily. Does anyone know a quick way to remove the majority of gunk with minimal effort.

I was thinking of stirring it all up and then siphoning the worst away... will that work?

mmmm well you could use a turkey baster to swoosh water into the dirty areas, this would get it back into the water column to give your filter a chance to suck it up? But if you're going to siphon at all you may as well just clean the substrate normally as stirring it up is only going to make it hard to suck out since it's going to be flying everywhere instead of just sitting on/in the substrate - my two cents!

That would work. I don't personally like these, but in your situation they would be quite usefull to get rid of the... stuff, without having to take water out :good:
Something like this

P.S. Hope you get well soon

I've got the marina one of those, I really like it! It means I can clean the substrate any time without doing a water change. I did saw the little "prongs" off the bottom of the syphon because I have sand so don't need those bits - it increased the suction and makes it sooooo much better!

Thanks - I'll give the turkey baster a try. Sounds like a plan. Im hoping that by the time the order for a new gadget arrives I will be fully better - so wont be ordering anything new.

I shall just make sure I can give the tank a bloomin good clear out when Im all mended. Thanks both

connect your syphon to a garden hose and send the water directly outside. Refill the tank by connecting directly to the taps and dosing your dechlor accordingly.

no heavy lifting & much easier water changes.

Use your fingers and pull each turd out one at a time  .

Seriously, I like to either stir the whole tank up and do a large water change, or siphon out some water and stick a garden hose in the crevices to blow out the poo and then change the water again.

Edit: Also, turn off your filter when you stir up your tank, the sand may kill your filter (I have lost many a HOB this way lol)
