Evaporation

Hi,

Just top up with tap water, no need for Prime?

ATB

Tets.
I add Prime at the appropriate dosage for the water added. I use a one gallon pitcher so I just fill it and mix in prime prior to top off. Might not use the full gallon, but it makes dosing the Prime easier.

Your aquarium should contain beneficial bacteria, which are an essential componant of your tank's waste management system.
Any water added directly from the tap, without being treated by Prime or some other water conditioner, will kill that bacteria and you'll have toxic waste in your tank.

Once Upon A Time...it was considered enough to just top up the tank, when water evaporated.
Now we know better and do regular water changes.

Hey :)
Evaporation affects only the water molecule (H2O).
Metals/nutrients/minerals present in the water do not evaporate. By filling evaporation with mineralized water you risk accumulation of minerals/metals/nutrients.
Evaporation must be filled with reverse osmosis water only.

Easily remedied by doing WC's instead of topping off, then you don't have a need for RO

At this point we are not talking about evaporation but simply about water change.
Even simpler : put a lid on the aquarium 😂
And not all lids are created equal! The hood that originally came with my 29g would allow about 1.5" evaporation a week. This was a full cover hood. I changed to the flat glass to accommodate a new light and it might be only about .5" in a week now.
