Hi all

my previous thread: http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?/topic/429414-dropsy-or-pregnancy/

I was looking for some help seeing if my beautiful dwarf gourami (sofie) was expecting, or had dropsy.

well, of course the worst had to happen.

it really hurts to see her like this, shes gaining red wilts all over her body, wedging herself in strange places, even using the plants I put at the top of the tank for her boyfriend to hopefully make a bubble nest to prop herself almost out of the water

how would i go about euthanasia?

that question kills to ask but every time I look up her boyfriend is still watching over her and taking care of her and i swear to god i am a grown man and ive never seen something so sad and i cant seem to stop crying

i just don't want more suffering, and i don't want it to spread

Hello! The best way to euthinize her is to get some clove oil and use 1 mL for every 4 liters of water or 1 mL per every gallon of water. Shake up this mixture and add fish. Once fish is anesthetized, add lots of crushed ice to do the rest. Dont put the fish in the freezer as that would be painful.

If you cant get clove oil you can also euthinize in other, more graphic ways. If you want me to lost some of those I will, but I will only if you want to know them.

I sadly cant clove oil at this hour and i dont have it in heart to bludgeon her or freeze her. i know i must seem greedy but i just cant do that to her

thank you for your help

I ont blame you. If she is still alive in the morning, you can always take a quick trip to get some though. I am so sorry you have to go through this.

First of all. I am so so so sorry. I have been there and know exactly how you feel. I have always euthanized my fish with clove oil....... and even that can be rough.

:(

This is a pet...  I would recommend turning off lights for now. Get some clove oil from a natural foods store in the morning. That is the most peaceful way you can put your gourami down. Otherwise, you need to resort to other methods.

thank you, both of you. I will hopefully be able to pick some up tomorrow if she makes it through the night.

thank you again for being so understanding

I am so, so terribly sorry to hear :( I am not sure the quickest method. As Ellie said; don't put the fish in the freezer. Best of luck.

Never easy.. Hang in there.. They will be without pain shortly. Be strong for your friend!

Oh dear, thats a real shame, unfortunately it does happen to a lot of us and having to put them down is one of the sadder part of fish keeping.

There are several methods and clove oil, ice water/ice, a quick flick to head will put them out their misery, none of these are particularly nice to do but just for a few seconds or minute they are out go misery and much better then leaving them to suffer.

For Clove Oil method, this is quoted from another Mod, Fluttermoth, from another thread and is helpful,

"I'm just adding some guidance on the use of clove oil, so you all know how to use it.

The lethal dose is 25 drops per litre of water. Measure out a litre of water from your tank, and put it in a container you won't need to use for anything else (the smell of clove oil stays for ages).

Take a small amount of water from the litre and put it in a small jar, add the clove oil to that and shake it until it goes white. Put the fish in the large container and then pour the clove oil mix from the jar into the larger container. The fish will, I promise you, be unconscious within seconds and dead in a minute."

Hope that helps a little bit.

Might be to late but I've heard vodka is a good way to do it.
Condolences on the loss.  I lost my crayfish recently and that was rough.  Invited some friends over and gave him a funeral pyre in the back yard.  Seems a little silly but I have a fond memory of him and now I have a good way to remember him after.

This stuff can also be used, a little pricey but have heard it is a decent product for euthanising. Although have not got or tried this product myself.

http://www.vetark.co.uk/pages/Aqua-Sed.aspx

Quoted from the website from the link above,

"The process is simple, confine the fish in a relatively small volume of water in a plastic bag and add Aqua-Sed at a dose of 4 pumps per litre. This fish will become anaesthetised first, and quickly, then should be left for a period to become sufficiently deeply anaestheised for brain function to cease."

As for using vodka, not sure but don't think its a good way, causes pain to gills, as for my point, someone said to me, ever put alcohol on a cut?

I do know the link is UK based but its good for you to know that there are products that can be purchased for this process of euthanasia and for others to know about. So a little research can perhaps come up with the same product or similar.

thank you for all your help everyone, but last night before bed i did one last check-up. she was inverted and dying. I stayed up with her, holding her in my hand as she passed away.

again, thank you

So sorry Gingerman.

Wish you the best moving forward keeping lots of happy fish :)
