I have heard that a one or two drops of clove oil in a dish with the fish in it, is another way to humanely kill the fish, is this right?

I dunno about that.

If you want to humanely kill a fish, don't pussyfoot about it. Place the fish on a hard surface, like a chopping board, and sever the head with a clean blow from a sharp knife.

The fish will die instantly (don't worry if it keeps moving afterwards, it's just a relfex, the fish is well dead).

There's no need to place unnecessary stress on the fish.

IMO beheading is cruel and gruesome - taking the fish out of water. Also who would want to cut the head of their pet if there was another way - and there is.

Clove oil is a good method. I know of people using it but I am not sure of the specifics.

Good luck

How ironic would it if he lopped a finger off in the process? :kana:

Page 22 of that linked article shows up to me as part of the reference section. Maybe that's just due to Acrobat.

For me, page 19 (document page 687) contains a section about fish.

You could also put the fish in a little cup with tank water and a lid and put it in a freezer....

Do you have some proof of that? Everything i've read indicates that as the water cools, the fish goes to sleep and it's processes shut down long before it actually freezes.

Yeah, I'm sure you'd just love to be frozen to death. -_-

Hi, i'm not a cold blooded creature, fish are, completely different physiology at work. As i said, the information i have read has indicated that the fish are unconscious long before the actual freezing, since they are cold blooded, and this seems logical. If this is incorrect, that's cool, i understand that some "common knowledge" tidbits are actually myths, so please provide some information if what i have read isn't true rather than just making a sarcastic jab, thanks.

Fish don't even feel pain or if they do in a way completely different to most higher lifeforms. The clove oil, freezing, beheading or completely smashing the skull of the fish instantly are the best ways I've found though the last one is probably the messiest.

*Feels sick thinking about it* I never had to kill mine. They usually got sick and started dying and where dead before I could grab the net. Sad, but I would imagine the quicker the better. I froze bugs for a bio class, but fish, I'd love to much to freeze and theny I'd naturally wonder if it was quick or not. Now, if you had some sort of quick freeze thing that would freeze in 3 sec. or less, then I'd freeze it. Too bad there's no way to make it easy, quick, and less stressful on the owner. Like with cats and dogs.
