How do you euthanase your fish? I just wanted to know which method is most popular.

feel free to post your oppinions

when ever i have to euthaniase a fish i take it out the wter if it's nearly but normaly i don't euthaniase my fish.

I voted Different method:

I've only had to do it a handful of times (over a many year period) and have always done it the clove oil way (not with Vodka - many people only use Clove oil). Each occasion it was a simple few second procedure and fish certainly appeared never to struggle and seemed to be dead within seconds - minutes at most.

However, if I have to do this again, I will use Steelhealr's "rapid cold immersion" (which by the way you don't have listed either).

Jimboo. how do you do it, i mean - it seems like a tough job - doesnt the fish jump about?

when ever i have to euthaniase a fish i take it out the wter if it's nearly but normaly i don't euthaniase my fish.

do you mean you take it out of the water?

Bloo:

Hi, Yes, im not aware of all the different types of euthanasia, hence why i put Different method, please state.

The clove/vodka method meane either clove oil or vodka.

Thanks.

im sorry :(

Good luck with your platy, hope it has a quick death. he'll be in the big sea in the sky with all his other fishy friends

it's only tough if you let it get to you. by that point the fish is suffering and things cant get much worse. i only keep small community fish and have only had to do it to cardinals, danio's and a glowlight tetra. they jump a bit but not much. after a few seconds out of water they stay still for you to do the deed.

i wouldn't fancy using this method on a big plec or my angel for example. those would probably get the clove oil treatment not that i've had to consider this at all. fingers crossed i wont ever have to. when my silver dollars got whitespot i just medicated and left them too it, i came home one day to floaters so the decision was already made for me thank god not that it's nice to loose fish but ideally i'd like them to pass away naturally. i'll only step in if they have been sick for ages and dont show any signs of improvement.

I've had to euthanise and it's never a pleasant thing. I find the clove oil effective usually within seconds. But if I had the choice I'd never have to euthanise. :-(
Hugs,
P.

I'm not a fish and I'm alive so I can't speak from personal experience, but just to play devil's advocate on the clove oil... If you look at the bottle, it says to avoid contact with soft tissue or membranes because it burns like you wouldn't believe. So my question to pose is- Aren't fish basically made up of soft tissue and membranes? Just something to throw out there. Maybe it's quick but excruitiating?

For pulling them out of the water, I would never suggest doing that to a betta or any labryinth fish. They will dry out before they stop breathing. Keep in mind many Thai shippers send their fish without water, just wrapped in wet java moss or a wet cloth. So this would not be a quick death for them.

I wrap the fish in a damp towel and then smash its head in with a heavy rolling pin, its never failed me yet and is much less gory than cutting the heads off live fish.

i know its wrong to boil fish but that seems to be the quickest and most effective way for me to do it. as i don't have clove oil nor can i ever find it when i go to the store and vodka is to expensive ot use on fish. also i am afraid that if i bash its head i won't hit it hard enought to kill it or i'll hit it to hard and splatter it all about (sorry for the graphic). i would prefer other ways if possible, but i can't bring myself to cutting off the head either as they still look at you gasping.

like i said i want to do it another way and until i can get some clove oil thsi is the only method that seems available to me at this time. thankfully i only had to do 2 fish like this, so it isn't to bad. i pray to find another alternative before i ever have to do it again.

So if you know it's "wrong" - why don't you try the "rapid cold immersion" next time - that won't cost you anything :) It's in the pinned Euthanasia topic now.

I used clove oil... some people said it has taken a while, but all I can say is.. Dont be tight with the clove oil... if your not sure you put in enough.. put some more in and stir it.. my raphael catfish died in about 2 seconds flat.. with a smaller fish i would have no problem with killing it in even quicker ways, but this spikey bigger thing was more tricky, and and so i bottled it and went for the clove oil..
