Emperor 400 Question

I may not be understanding this filter but is there enough media volume to effectively form a biofilter? Perhaps someone familiar with these could comment?

I just bought one as I'm setting up a tank I decided not to fill the gray cartridges with media, instead I went out and bought two more blue sponges. I was just wondering if this was okay?

Thanks

I use the 280 on my goldfish tank and the 400 on my new tropical that i fell into about 2 months ago.

I have used both methods. On my goldfish tank I just use both the sponges with carbon included. However, with the 400 I am using just one sponge on each side and leaving the plastic cartridge as is. It will still collect the media and then you can always place ceramic or what you prefer in there. I don't think that not having the plastic will be any dramatic problem in the tank as you will have the carbon anyway with extra mechanical also with two sets of sponges. You should be just as efficient as far as my experience.

:good:

I run my only 280 with the filter cartridge that came with the filter in one of the cages and some ceramic bio-media in the other. I figured that the need for a good biological filter was much more pressing than the need for better mechanical filtration as 2 sponges would have provided.

How does the biomedia volume compare with your Renas, OM47?

It is much smaller than the volume on even my Rena XP1, WD. The OP is not looking for a new filter though.

No, I know, I was just trying to get myself more familiar with more of the HOBs and get them sorted out in my mind a little more. Thanks OM47!
