ive had some recent additions to my tank as a pair of ellioti have produced fry my problem is their not so clever at guarding now and have watched some of my other fish pounce ,so ive netted what i could and the rest ive left with the parents, what food can i feed the fry in the hatchery , their only a week old or so and have i sealed their fate by taking them away from their parents too early or is it possible i could rear them ? i think ive got about 30 fry in the hatchery about half and the others are with their parents ,i didnt want to interfere but couldnt watch as my other fish ate most of them . any ideas or help would be grateful

thanks paul

You can crush some pellet or even flake food in a pill crusher or between two spoons to a powder to feed the fry.

thanks ive already ground some tetra prima granules to powder and the fry seem to be taking to it and done some flakes so am happy at the moment, the fry are definitely getting bigger although the amount ive now left has reduced but i suppose thats nature hey. il try and get some pics on later when ive cleaned the tank dont want any bad comments lol , i keep loking in my tank every 5 minutes to see if theyve grown lol or somethings changed but thats me being eager as usual lol the fry are about 10mm now and swimming about near mum n dad .hope i can get at least 10 out of the bunch fingers crossed

Ive just moved mum and fry into a quarantine tank as mum is getting stressed too much ! The fry are very active now and needed to be in a tank out of harms way lol , ive now probably got about 20 fry which is depressing after id have guessed i had about 100 little swimmers a week ago , mums calmed down a lot now and can still see the other tank mates and keeps flaring up if any come too close to hers now, the tank ive removed them from has now calmed down and aggression has subsided so i think ive done the right thing ,fingers crossed im right .Not sure as to how to put pics up will have a go later .

I would love to keep them together but the female seems to have become aggressive towards the male and his fins have been nipped and he looks a bit worse for wear so ive decided to give him a rest from her for a while lol

Just got back from a week away chilling out to find the mum has eaten most of my fry apart from three ,ive removed mum from the tank and hope they do well on their own ! Not a happy chappy .I can only put this down too not feeding enough on the auto feeder :-(

It could be she is getting ready to spawn again too, they do sometimes eat the fry to make way for a new batch.

i had removed her and the fry from my community tank to stop the others from eating them and left the male in so not sure she would have been ready , ive not had much luck with fry as ive had 3 pairs of cichlids spawn and have reached 3 weeks then all get eaten so ive got my fingers and everything else crossed for the 3 i have left lol

well ive checked my tank and mum has spawned again i think this time i will remove just the fry when they are free swimming , ive still got the 3 fry from last time and their getting to about 20mm now and starting to see more definition in them

Remove the fry around 7-10 days and you should be ok :good:

will do this time , will the fry be ok with the older fry i put in b4 christmas or would i have to remove them ?

Not sure with Elliotti, but when I added some younger fry to my Severum fry the older ones started eating the smaller ones!
