im adding egg shell to the tank, but the shell has membrane on it...
is that ok?
is it true that egghsells contain magnesium?
doing it for my poor snails...

Based on this it is 96% calcium and on..y about 1% magnesium. my tap water has about a 3 to 1 calcium magnesium ratio. which disclose to the ratio in plant tissue So Egg shells don't have enough magnesium.

what does?
cuttlebone?
but they are so expensive LOL

Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) 1lb will last a long time foremost people, unless you have a very big tank. If you do by it make sure it is pure with with no sent orcoloring added.

in a 10 gallon aquarium 1.92 grams (equivalent to about 1/4tspp +1/8 tsp) will provide 5ppm (milligrams per liter) and boost GH by about 1 degree.
I used Rotalabutterfly (a fertilizer calculator for aquariums) to calculate the above for a target dose of 5ppm.

You can uses Gypsum (calcium sulfate) along with Epsom salt are the primary ingredients in sulfate GH boosters like seachem Equilibrium.

Other GH boosters are made from calcium chloride and magnesium chloride (chloride GH boosters)

Chloride and sulfate GH boosters work very well for boosteng GH. And typically plants like 3 parts calcium tone part magnesium (a 3 to 1 ratio). Plants and fish need calcium to live.

The most important thing you can do for your snails to insure your pH is as close as possible to 7 or more. If the PH drops below 7 the nail shell is start to dissolve. What I have done is I put a sea shell in my aquarium where the water flow around it is high. if the PH goes slightly acidic the sea shell will dissolve and and push the PH back up to 7. This helps prevent errosion of the snail shell. Since I am also using RO water with a GH os zero I make a GH booster of calcium chloride and magnesium sulfate.

my ph is 7.5-8
i have lots of coral where there is flow
where do i get magnesium sulfate and how do i make it work?
thanks

Don't put raw eggs or egg shell in the tank because chickens carry some nasty diseases that can stay on the egg shell, and some countries spray eggs with a disinfectant that can poison fish.

If you wash the egg with soapy water and then rinse well, it's less of an issue. You can also boil the egg shell to kill anything on it.

Epsom salt is commonly available in pharmacies. Amazon.com will sell you 19lbs for about $26. I have a small tank so I prefer to get it at loud wolf.com were I can get 4 ounces for about $7. They also sell calcium sulfate, calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. Everything on loud wolf is 99% purity.

The next step is to use a fertilizer calculator determine how much you need. I use Rotalabutterfly because it its focused on aquariums instead of lawns and gardens.

Enter the size of the tank then select DIY Then select the compound you want to use. For Epsom salt select MgSO4 7H2O. Then you can select dry dose meaning you are adding the dry Epsom salt directly to the tank.or you could make a liquid solution. I typically select dry,

If you select dry a box labeled I am dosing for.. Select "Dose to reach a target".
Then you enter the target dose in in milligrams per liter (PPM parts per million)

Then sellectcalculate. It will then tell you how much to add by weight or it will list how many teaspoons to add. So then you need a set of responses (sizes 1, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, 1/32,1/64". Note plastic teasopons will last longer than 316 stainless steel which tends to corrode. Or you need a scale capable of masuring grams to miligrams. Then you simply measure the amount and add it to your tank water
