Do these pumps run along side existing pump or replace it

Should I be expecting a large amount of movement in the water like the existing pump, as when fitted can hear the motor but no movement of water . Hope that’s makes sense. !

I imagine there would be extra noise, because the skimmer has an impeller as well.
