hi all,

im new to betta keeping. i got my first betta a week and a half ago. at the moment his tank is unfiltered as i have yet to find a filter that is weak enough not to bother him. (can anyone advise me of a good brand and where to buy it in the UK?)

i was wondering how to recognise the early stages of fin rot in bettas as i have not kept them before, and i gather fin rot is a fairly common problem with this particular fish.

if anyone has a picture or some advice i would be very grateful.

thanks x

The fins will start to look ragged or "sticky". Some fish will lose their appetite. The single most important factor in fin rot is water quality. If you keep up your water changes (100% in a unfiltered tank) you shouldn't have any problems with it.

all the filters i have brought are too strong. so far i got a fluval 1 (cant turn the speed down) and an elite stingray (again, its too fast and causes too much of a current). i have a 5 gallon hex.

my betta has white tips on his fis so i guess thats a good thing right?

he is all red. but the link said that black tips is not good but white tips is new growth?? :S :X

no idea on tank stats at the moment just did a water change yesterday, but only 50%

are those foam filters any good? ive not seen them beofre, but then maybe it was because ive never looked for them. lol

Just keep an eye on the fins and add a teaspoon of salt to his water, that sponge filter should be fine for a betta, you will need a air pump to operate it.

thats ok, ive got an air pump. i used it for a plastic airstone at one point.

ill go pick one up tomorrow. and some aquarium salt too. :)

if i use one of those foam ones how much % water change would work in a 5g per week and how often would the foam need changing?
