My lfs/local garden centre just scared life out of me. i mentioned i couldn't see the gavid spot on my what appears to be pregnant platy (or 2) and he said "oh well, it could be dropsy" now i've sat and checked for ages and no sticky out scales though i did notice on my black molly that she has a couple of what look like tiny holes round her eyes. maybe i'm now seeing diseases that aren't there? ?????

If the fish is swimming around happily, eating as normal, and no outward problems I would say Don't worry  ... If they are al ittle on the fat side with what looks like a swollen belly, but no scale disscolouration and a general dark area towards the anus of the fish ..they are preggers. Dropsy is very obvious, and most of the time tends to effect one side of the fish then spread around, When the light catches the fish the scales seem to be more silver in colour , very obvious fom normal fish scale colour, and are raised away from the body. The difference between the healthy tissue and the effected is very obvious.

If your'e still worried maybe post some pics if you have a camera.

I have had 3 platies die of dropsy...(because I overfed...but thats another story)....

In all 3 cases, it started as what looked like a graze on the side of their body...the next day the scales appeared to be raised....by that night, the whole body had raised scales....the poor fish looked like an orange pine cone  not knowing what it was, I didn't euthanise, which I wish I had as the next day the poor platy was so puffed up it couldn't close it mouth...obviously it couldn't eat. The whole time it was in the pine cone state it stayed in the one spot...when it tried to move for food it was like it was too hard for the poor little thing. Weird part was that when I FINALLY read about dropsy, I decided to euthanase it....(was crying as it was the first time)....I went to the tank and she had died in the time I had last looked at her to when I had decided to "help" her.

It is clearly different from a pregnant platy which is only big around the abdomen (like they are gonna burst the skin)
