Is this infectious

My platy died of dropsy...I wish I had gotten a picture of it. Your guppy looks different though!!

My platy was puffy all over...kinda like a puffed out pinecone (and all scale were sticking up)....she died the day after she puffed up (RIP little fishie).

I don't think it is contagious...in may case she got it from kidney failure as a result of me overfeeding her....BAD fish mommy :(

Good luck with him and let us know how it goes

All the Best

My guppy looked like that when he got dropsy...Unfortunately there isn't much you can do when you start to see them swell. :/

Chooklet, how can you tell that it's kidney failure? You did an autopsy? Just curious! :p

After she died I did some research on dropsy and organ failure (as I read that the 2 are linked....organ failure leads to dropsy symptoms)....she had red blotches (which I thought were injuries) the day before she got the dropsy symptoms. What I read was that kidney failure causes the blood in a fish to do something weird (dunno the science behind it) and the fish get internal bleeding (hence the red blotches).

SOOO....I isolated 3 platies for bullying when it really wasn't that at all...the kidney failure was from overfeeding too much protein :(

thanks all,

it hasnt died yet. BOOO HOOO.
what you cant see in the pics is the scales have gone all pointy and he is now starting to get red dots on him.
The thing is, I dont feed them much. i feed them once a day and every three days i feed them Live food. When i feed them in the morning its not like i chuck the whole hand full in. I take 1 pinch of it and break it up into small piecses then give it to them. then when that is all gone and they have checked all on the bottom i do it again. them i go to work and thats it.

the only thing i think it could be if it is over feeding is whe i feed them blood worms . i think because he is a greedy git and doesnt chew his food he eats more than the others. but i cant stop that.

Not all dropsy is caused from overfeeding, sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. It could also be caused from any number of infectious agents which he may have.

I hope he is OK but from all the reading I did they normally don't recover from it
:(...that made me cry reading that then my platy died just after I had finished reading. I know she was better off as she couldn't even eat her mouth was so puffy....poor little fish :byebye:

Let us know how she gets on
