I bought a piece of driftwood for my planted aquarium, hoping to add a rustic look to the bottom portion of the tank. The problem I have is that I have no clue how to cure this piece of driftwood. Yes, it is small and can be placed in a pot to boil. How long should I let it boil? Must I repeat the boiling process? What temp. to boil at? How to check if my driftwood is cured without adding it into my aquarium?

Don't boil it, you can run boiling water over it then leave it to soak.
Change the water every couple of days if it leaks tannins

I would put it in a bucket of cold water first to see if it goes brown , the water that is , I have just got 3 bits of bogwood that barely colouredthe water at all :)

Do you know what kind of wood it is?
Mopani leeches tannins for ages, redmoor doesn't so much

It is Malaysian driftwood. The instructions gave an option of either soaking or boiling it. So, I placed it into a bucket of cold water, without seeing any discoloration.
For boiling the instructions say -place wood in boiling water to quickly release tannic acids. Repeat until water is clear- Does this mean I boil it several times?

Boiling it will cause it to decompose quicker.
Matty's suggestion is good as long as you don't have any chemical blocks in your cistern

I put chemical cleaners in my toilet....But I guess I'll just have to soak it. Thanks for the help!!!!
