Since studies on ornamental aquariums are a bit sparse, I have been reading papers on recirculating aquaculture without hydroponics, specifically recirculating tank aquaculture.

This s a type of commercial fish farm very similar to what many people have in their aquariums, but on a much larger scale.

Anyway many of the papers indicated that in systems that are not overfed, and have a well established biofilter, either not enough oxygen or too much co2 tends to become a problem for these systems before ammonia and nitrite.

Of the aeration options given, including venturi water lines and pure oxygen injection, air diffusers look to actually be the most efficient method for most aquarist, as they both help to remove excess carbon dioxide and equalize deficiencies in oxygen.
