Hello :D

I was a-wondering today about this. No-one seems to care about my fish as much as I do, and people think I am nuts for spending £25 on a plec. Imagine if I showed them zebra plec prices?!

Even my boyfriend is useless and he lives here!! I asked him to feed the fish the other day and he didn't turn the filter off first and then he put so much in we had to scoop it out!!

STEP AWAY FROM THE AQUARIUM, PUT THE FOOD DOWN!

When I go away to festivals and such in the summer I do not get anyone to feed my fish, I think too little (for a short time) is better than too much by far and they have plants and such to munch on.

I dread to think what would happen if I was seriously ill for any amount of time. My poor fish. I might have to give up smoking/drinking/eating and crossing roads as a precaution!

I mean, what's wrong with these people?! I personally don't let anyone near my fishtanks and I do all water changes/testing and feeding myself. And I am the laziest person I know, so I must be scared!!

Look but don't touch - that's my motto!

Anyway, please share...

When I go away, I have my mom visit my house every day to feed my cats and birds and water my flowers. This is what has worked well for me - I take little paper dixie cups and put an appropriate amount/combination of foods in each cup for each day for each tank. I line them up in front of or on top of the tanks to which they belong. My mom knows that she starts on the left hand side of the line and, each day that she comes over, she is to dump one container into its appropriate tank. This way, I can make sure that all my fish are receiving what they need, and although my fish won't get their live/fresh/frozen foods as per normal, I can still provide algae wafers, shrimp pellets, flakes, sinking freeze dried tablets etc. in reasonable quantities. It has worked like a charm thus far.

had to vote other :S cos I don't know ........and am going away for a week in June and  I don't know what to do!

Do like the idea of preparing foods and leaving in little containers though........now that could work :D thank you :D ......I have been really worried about how to make sure my fishes are ok.......................now what about the w/changes while I'm away  am bound to have newborn guppy fry in the tanks ...........

Lol! I actually did make her show me how she could open the tank, dump the food in, and close the tank again. :*) I also made her review the entire process with me... So, you're going to come over tomorrow, and what are you going to do? hehehe

If you're going to be gone long enough that water changes are a factor, I'd advise feeding VERY minimally in your absence (fish are fine for a week without food, although in any sort of semi aggressive or aggressive tanks, expect hungry fish to be more volatile). I'd also drop the temp by a couple of degrees to slow their metabolisms down a bit. The less they move, the less they need to eat, and the less they eat, the less waste they'll pollute their own water with. As for newborn guppy fry, that's a toughie!! A whole week with newborn fry ... they'll definitely need to be fed daily. :/ If you have somebody even a tiny bit willing to do this for you, I'd suggest live baby brine, as enough could be given to last the day in one feeding. That still doesn't help with the water change issue, though. :dunno:

thought the answer might be to transfer most of the fish out of the 5 gall guppy tanks into the 2 bigger ones...........just leave the cories in there ...... :S any fry born then would possibly be eaten by the loaches, kribs, keyholes etc (may survive as tanks are well planted) but would be less likely to get water fouling problems........... :/ not so good for any babies born but better long term for the adults

I do all the maintenance on my betta tanks and I'm going to be doing all the maintenance on the 10 gallon tank as well. I find it hard to let go and let others do the work. When someone goes near the tanks I watch them like a hawk. I guess I'm over protective of my fish tanks

LOL

I know what you mean. I must make my b/f nervous when he's near them. And, when he 'fed' them the other day.

:D

As long as they have fish of their own and their fish are healthy, showing that they know what they are doing, then yes, I would let someone else feed de fish.

Chris :)

Yes - provided....

However, my dad has his own (untried)ideas about fishkeeping. Last week I found 20 or so pellets at the bottom of one of my imbellis bowls - I usually feed them 4 pellets every other day. He said that one wasn't eating so he poured a whole bunch 'for later'. He said a lot poured out and he didn't even know how to clean it out. Now I think because of that my imbellis is having a digestive problem. His bowl has been clean for a few days, but he's swimming with an arched back - like a shark threat display. I hope it's just consipation.

I dont let anyone feed them, my mom squeezes the flakes all up  , and it sticks to her fingers  , then she uses her nails to get them off  , and her hands have all this lotion on them

I really like the dixie cup idea. However, I don't see myself going away anytime soon. But I would trust anyone in my family to do it cause they know how much my fish mean to me. And if any should happen to go to fishy heaven, then they have to pay to have them replaced when I return  But yes, I would trust my family.

If I'm away for more than the weekend I get someone in my family to, but I leave very detailed instructions and give them several demonstrations before I leave. The instructions are about a page long and have a couple samples of food tapes on it (for instance, this is how much to feed the fish each day, TOTAL: _____ ; and this is how big each flake should be: _____ . :p
