Ive just been washing my plants in some tank water to get rid of snails & eggs etc but I read something somewhere that said plants should be quaratined like fish and bleached bfore putting in tank.

Just wondered whether people worry about plants carrying diseases & parasites and bleach or use some other method of making plants safe?

My other question was, shouldnt plants from reputable places like birstall & greenline etc be safe?

Sorry but bleaching ones plants sounds like a bad idea, after all they will retain the residue, and whats more i suspect they will die. I can definitely see a case for rinsing, and possibly for quarantine if you are patient enough.

if i remember right, they were bleaching using potassium permanganate (i think) and thoroughly rinsed afterwards before going in tank.

Never tried it as didnt see plants as a problem with regards to diseases.

Yeh 1:20. I only wash them to get rid of copper based snail treatments. Dont do anything else. Every tank has algae, bleeching the plants isnt going to change that and you'll never get all the snails either, if you did, you'd probably kill the plant in the proccess.

Not overfeeding the fish is the best way to control snails IMO

My LFS recommended rinsing plants in hot salty water before adding them to the tank.

I've always soaked my plants in salty water. It seems to get rid of the snails.

yah, i just got some aquatic plants from ly local lake and they have zebra mussles on them.

i was thinking of rinsing them with really hot water and then letting them rest in a hot bucket of water over night.

think this will kill them all?
