Hi All & Merry Christmas.
After a fishless cycle and much research I finally picked up some fish yesterday for my first ever tank from my LFS (4 x Yellow Labs and 4 x Yellow Tail Acei)
Since sticking them in the tank initially they were all highly active and were swimming up and down in one corner of the tank continuously, this has since settled a little. However, and at times the fish seem relaxed and swim round the tank between the rocks and seems fine, and this morning while the lights were off they were all resting / sleeping. However, for the majority of the time the cichlids seem to be mostly either swimming up and down in the corners with the noses pressed against the glass, or side to side across the front keeping tight / pressing against the glass with their sides, the Acei's seem to be exhibiting this behaviour slightly less.
In addition I have also just noticed one of them flashing twice in a row (if thats the correct term for when the fish sort of bounces sideways off the sand / gravel) though this the only time i've them do this and I actually caught this on the video that I've uploaded where you can also see some of the behaviour above between 8 - 12 seconds here: https
/vid.me/5lN4
Does this all sound quite normal considering they are in a new tank, with quite likely slightly different water properties then they are used to, or is this indicative of an issue?
In addition, I would love to know if my Yellow labs in particular look healthy, 3 of them seem to have some whitish / scales patches and one especially is much more discoloured then the others. I've uploaded some pics but they dont really show the white discolouration of one of the palest one very well, but do show the white spots / specs:
To give some background on the tank and conditions, The tank is a 55g and was fishless cycled with ammonia. Since then I did a 95% water change 2 days ago using tap water filtered through a Pozzani Nitrate Filter (as the nitrates straight from my tap are at 25ppm), and I used API Stress Coat+ to treat the water.
When I did tank readings yesterday prior to putting the fish in these were as follows using liquid test kits:
PH 7.4
KH 160 ppm
GH 280 ppm
Ammonia 0
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Tank temp 26c
Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to be as detailed as possible. Essentially, the two real questions I have are is this behaviour normal and do the yellow labs in particular look healthy?
Thanks all for any help or insight you can offer, could be worrying about nothing, but want to be sure.
Cheers
Graham
