I just found this on youtube, and I wanted to know your opinions of it. If it's a good filter I may make it when I get my tank up and running.

I've used his method to build all my sponge filters and it works really good for cheap sponges go to a hardware store like Home Depot they have the yellow sponges for cleaning cars and stuff just buy the cheap ones with no chemicals added and your good to go :)

That's good to know, one more question :p What is the maintenance like on a filter like this? How often do you need to change the sponge?

I don't ever change the sponge maybe once a month I syphon a bucket of water out of the tank and squeeze the sponge out in that water.
Don't use chlorinated water or it will kill off all the good bacteria.

Good to know, thanks! :)

Only problem I have with this is the pump being so noisy! :(

I've had good luck with the tetra airpump as far as quiet-Ness and durability. Its blue, dome shaped and they sell them at walmart. Before I had the check valve I had the pump sitting on top of my light fixture I couldnt hear it at all. Just my 2¢

Yeah tetra whispers are quiet. The bubbles are louder than the pump!

that second video with the invisible filter, it looks like a great idea but how much pull does it really have?! will it really pull much crap or just work mostly to filter and transform the bacterias?
