I'm thinking about making one for both my 10 and 15 gallon tanks to give them the extra filtration. I want to go as cheap as I possibly can with this. I noticed that the biggest things that would cost the most would be the filter sponge if I bought it from the pet store (I haven't found anything under four dollars) and the filter media I've looked at for fish tanks just cost way too much for amount I really don't need.

Now, the questions are:

Can I use just a regular dish sponge or something similar to that?

What alternates can I used for a filter media that won't cost an arm and a leg?

I'm probably going to use a plastic bottle, will that be okay in the long run?

No. Chemicals and such.

Pure 100% polyester isnt expensive.

It should be okay. You might need to replace it every once in a while, but plastic bottles are cheap.
