Hi everyone, one of my rummy nose tetras has a scale sticking out from its body. It was acting and eating normally, so were the others. What could this be? I will try and get a pic, but they are swimming about wildly right now (excited from feeding time).

Thanks in advance and hope you can help ASAP! :)

Hard to know exactly what could be happening... could be an injury, and heal on its own... could be a number of other things.

More information would be helpful.  Tankmates, decor, recent changes, etc.

Until you know for sure what the problem is, it would be best if you were to do daily 50% water changes with dechlorinater (try to temperature match the water too) to prevent infection.

Keep your eye on the scale; if there is no reddening, white patch, cotton-wool growths, spots/abscesses near where the scale is sticking out it is generally safe to just leave it alone. It is the skin beneath the scale that you need to observe for problems. So long as you keep your water quality excellent, give the fish a healthy and varied diet and ensure it doesn't bump the scale on anything you should have nothing to worry about.
