hi today i noticed that a white spot yesterday had turned into cotton wool disease, i know why this happened as i got a spike of nitrites to 0.5 and nitrates rose to 20-40ppm since i had a mini cycle going on due to new filter even though i left old sponges in, anyway the fish is out the tank and down the toilet as it was too late, however i am worried about the other fish and i want to introduce a new fish into the tank!
question 1. is the virus still in my tank even though the other fish show no signs of infection?
2. if the virus is ever present as some of my research suggested (not sure on source however) will my fish live happily ever after as it would only infect them if stressed?
3. is there a way of removing the virus without having to cycle from the start again?
4. how long before i can introduce a new fish into this tank, will be expensive also so i don't want too loose it for sure!?!
thanks in advance for everyone's help but i'm hoping an exper4t can point me in the direction of success.

Hi there, and welcome. I wouldn't recommend adding anymore fish for a while. You need to ensure everything in your tank, and with your fish is settled. Even though they may appear ok, Discus are very susceptible to stress, and any underlying issues can appear so quickly.

Get your water condition sorted out, as this is key to their health, and I would recommend daily water changes of 30-40% until everything is stable. Your fish will let you know when everything is good, big appetites and vibrant colours indicates happy health fish.

There are 2 key ingredients to healthy Discus, water and food. Really good water quality and a varied diet of good food.

Keep a close eye on them, and if you notice any problems give me a shout and I will try to help you out with the best course of treatment.

Good luck
