Difference

I'm having difficulty with my female platy. The thing is i 'm not sure if she is a Xiphophorus maculatus platy or a Variatus platy. She is a blue speckled colour, does this automaticly make her Xiphophorus maculatus?
Also, I was excited to find what I thought was a gravid spot underneath her belly, however now i have read up on Variatus platy more and discovered thay have this spot even when not pregnant. How can i tell what type of Platy she is and if the black spot i can see is really a gravid spot?

well..if u could post picutures, that'll help and yes i have had platties who alwasy have the gravid spot
