I have a 150watt Delta Therm heater. I am in the process of cycling my 64ltr tank and recently had to do a water change. I noticed that on removal of the heater, it was heavily caked in limescale. The water in my area is rather hard and do have to de scale kettle etc very frequently. My question is is it ok to scrape it off, it does take some scraping to get it off though. Will the continued presence of the lime-scale effect the overall performance of the heater and if so is it advisable once the cycle is over to add any kind of softener to the water to prevent this continued build up. Grateful for any advice.

I wouldn't do that coz it might make your water unstable. Apparently messing with the softness/hardness isn't really a good idea. I can't see why you can't scrape it off, I;d just be careful you don't damage it. Will it come off if you just wash it? I dunno much about that, your water much be harder than mine.

The water is extremely hard. Have done a GH test and a KH test and both results were last colour on the scale. Tap water ph is fine just concerned that if it has that effect on the heater what's it going to do to the fish. It won't come off easily with washing as the heater has these black dots all over the area that heats up and it seems to stick better to these areas, and whilst scraping it off managed to remove most of these dots (not sure if that's bad or not) Wondering if i'd be better with one that has a smooth finish to it. Might be harder for the limescale to stick too.

Yeah maybe. You can try asking in the hardware section, they might know :)
