hey everyone, i left this morning to go home, and came back to my dorm, and my yellow lab was dead. well not all the way dead, but it died about 5 minutes later. but when i took it out, some of the scales were missing, and my water is fine, no nitrites, nitrates or anything at all. so any help would be great so if there is some virus or something in the tank, i can get it taken care of before it spreads to my other fish.

thanks in advace

Sorry for your loss, need to no size of tank in gallons, plus water stats in ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and ph, what fish and how many, missing scales can be a number s things, parasites, bacteria, or scraped them on gravel or ornaments.

tank size 36 USA gallons. nitrite 0 nitrate 0 amonia, do not have a test for this. ph is around 7.5. other fish are 3 convicts, an albino catfish, and a common pleco. and i know the scales didnt fall off of rubbing against gravel, since i have a sand substrate tank.

Sorry just keep an eye on the other fish as missing scales can mean bacterial, or parasite, i would recommend some daily water changes on the tank.

ok, i did a couple of water changes, tested the ammonia, it is at the "safe" level according the test strips. and yet i had another fish die during the night last night. the only thing that has changed in the tank recently is i added some real plants so i could get my fake ones out, because i do not like the way fake plants look. could this have anything to do with the mysterious deaths?

also i have noted that when the tank light is on, the fish do not swim around as much as they do when the lights are off.

Did you sterlise the plants as they can carry parasites, look over the body for anything that look unusual.

no.... i didnt know you had to sterilze plants, so how would i go about doing this? the only thing i did do was put my piece of drift wood in boiling water for about 10 minutes.

I no you can sterilise plants but i don' no how, maybe ask advice in the plant section, i would watch out for parasites.
