Dark spots started appearing on my PKs scales. Only on his left side, though. The dark spots are about the size of 2-4 scales. There are only two spots. They're not pineconing or swollen or anything. Is this some sort of disease? Jester appears pretty normal.

Dark spots??

Can you get pics?

It might be marbling - but might not.

How's the pk's behavior?? Eating well? Water good? etc?

Sorry, don't have a digital camera.. :/

I'm pretty sure he's not marbling, though. He's rather old.

He's acting just like the day (or the days after) I got him. He eats well and is pretty active. Doesn't seem sick at all. :/

I'd have to say ammonia burns. If they're that small, and dark. They probably are. They normally go away, but in some cases, they don't. My Zeus has those dark spots forever.

100% every week. My bettas are in half-gallons. Sorry if some of you think this is cruel. They used to be in bigger bowls/tanks but they didn't really like it. Agoraphobia and all. Back to the topic. Jester's still under observation.

Oh, and congrats on your 500th post, sukie! :D

I agree i would go with ammonia burns, as once a week is no good on that size bowl, more like a water change of every two days.

I have to agree it sounds like ammonia burns. Try doing extra water changes.
One of my girls has mycobacteriosus (or some such! I never can say it.)which shows as black but not in spot form. Happily she's fine and the only cure for it is no longer available. :X I do find melafix and pimafix help at a very slow rate which means treating for like.....ever. Which I can't do with all the other inhabitants. Bygones. Am trying a salt dip tomorrow. Since another of the girls has managed to hurt herself. Got herself inside the catfish sleeping cave and consequently ot....*ahem* sat on. :X She's ok, nothing good clean water and avoiding annoyed synos won't cure.
Best of luck with yours.
Hugs,
P.

:dunno: Eh what do I know. . .

I've had one of my guys get the ammonia burns - and it should up on the tips of his tail - and they were red.

But amio - if other folks are saying ammonia burns - then eh what do I know.

If the fish had red on the tail it was septicemia.

Just to be sure, start doing at minimum twice weekly water changes (doesn't have to be 100%). As bettas get older they are less able to fight off infections and stuff so you need to keep their environment as clean all the time as possible.
