Hi guys. I've heard about this process quite a few times, but I've never fully learnt about it. Has anyone here cycled their tank with prawns? What exactly is the process and is it a good method? I'd love to learn about it. Thanks!

no reason it should not work. but, its probably better to stick to ammonia. you dont have to wait for the food to break down then

I suppose that's true, but I guess it'd also be alot easier to buy prawns than ammonia.

perhaps more places stock them. but easier? lol, that would be am matter for conjecture. also, and, more importantly. you can, correctly, measure the amount of ammonia you use. and, as i said previously, is available right away.

forget the prawns it takes ages and it stinks like grimsby fish docks the ammonia is the best way by far

I would strongly recommend against doing a fishless cycle with prawns, living in Australia its virtually impossible to buy pure ammonia, so i tried doing this method and it is absolutly terrible. I put the prawn inside of a panty hose and waited for it to break down. Within three days the stench was unbearable. Seeing as though the tank was inside my bedroom I had to take it out, It stunk out my whole house.

I know the majority of people on this forum would advise against fish in cycling, including me after going through the process (50% daily waterchanges are shocking). But if you really cannot get ammonia like me and are dedicated enough to carry out the massive water changes, there is a really good thread on this forum, i think it is pinned? that walks you through it.

Have used shrimp, snails, fish food, and or seed material from established disease free aquariums to begin maturing process (cycling). Like most methods, there is a right way, and a wrong way.
If you like,I can explain method'(s) in detail. Just send me a PM. Not inclined to debate the merits of one over the other in this particular climate.

Yeah, I'm in New Zealand and I have a hard time finding any of the stuff other members are talking about. Yeah, I accidently went through a fish in cycle with my first tank (over here anyways, I had one over in England but my parents maintained it and stuff like that, I just fed them and looked at them), just because I didn't actually know about cycling then (I'd heard of it but didn't actually understand it), and this is my second tank so I'm just weighing out the different options. And I've got that one bookmarked, thanks!
