Ok, so I need some help.

My tank is all setup, all the equipment, ornaments, water. I'm ready to cycle now. I've got a bottle of Ammonia (but I don have the percentage in the solution, how can I find this out? Is a bottle of Homecare Essentials Ammonia bought from Robert Dyas), and I've also got my API Master test kit.

My main question is how do I find the percentage in the ammonia bottle?

I think I can do the rest from various cycling articles on this forum, but any other advice would be well appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Good afternoon Tather....i am a compete newbie like yourself (currently at stage 3 of my fishless 30L cycle) and the Ammonia i bought had the percentage written on the side of the bottle...

Don't be afraid to use the experience, knowledge and opinions of the users of this forum...they really do know their stuff and have helped me out no end...

Continue to post your test results up, it would be good to see how a fellow novice is coping with his cycle.

Have fun.
Terry.

Also new here but my advice would be to assume it's 9.5-10% solution, most seem to be and use the calculator to work out what 1ppm would be for your tank. Dose it and then test with you kit. I'm pretty sure House hold ammonia isn't going to be above 10% and certainly not up to 50%. If it comes up as 1ppm you know to add 4-5 times that amount to get it to 4-5 ppm and if it isn't you can adjust appropiately. I've never used that sort of ammonia but assume that you have checked the ingredients to make sure it's just ammonia and water and hasn't got any added scent ect.

The only ingredients listed are 'Ammonia Solution', so I guess it'll be alright. Maybe I'll try testing it in a bucket, to be sure, then do some basic math to work it out for the tank.

Does anyone know what the optimum temperature is for fishless cycling? Thanks for the help.

Hello Tathar,
The ideal temp is around 29c

Skins.

Thats the way to go.

Agree with the others, assume you have found your dosing amount by now but its not a big deal, you just try little tests that you think from the calculator are likely to be low and the test your way upward. It helps to have a little syringe with amount markings but it can be done by counting drops from an eyedropper or simply a graduated medicine spoon.

I remember people buying ammonia from that source before and I don't remember anything being wrong with it. We always try to determine that the ammonia doesn't have any dyes, fragrances, surfactants or soaps and if possible we do a shake test, trying to determine that the bubbles that form look roughly like they would with simple water, bubbles going away in 2 or 3 seconds and that it doesn't try to foam a lot.
