i've got a rather large fish tank

i had a 240 gallon tank in my apartment, and the smell wasn't so bad, it was really only there on very humid days, however i moved and had to put all my fish into the 180 gallon tank at my parents house

well i went to visit the other day, and the room that the tank is in reeks of fish, the tank is clean, the food is tucked away, its a room thats a similar environment to what my apartment was, yet the stink is unbearable

so i'm looking for tips on cutting down on the smell that comes from the fishtank
do things like dehumidifiers get rid of it?
is there something that can be added to the water?
what about some kind of lame trick like just throwing orange peels everywhere?

what do all of you do when the smell becomes overwhelming?

Check for spilled tank water. If it is on carpeting it will get quite a stench to it. Use a bacteria neuteralizer that is designed for pet urine if it is on carpeting. If it's on tile or hardwood, a solution of 1 part bleach to 20 parts water will kill the bacteria that are causing the odor.

I have over 700 gallons of tanks in an 8'x16' room, there is no odor to speak of, unless I spill tank water on the tile floor, and don't mop. Within two days it will start to reek, a quick mop with bleach/water solution eliminates it.

Try soaking an old towel with tank water, wring it out & toss it in the corner balled up for a couple of days. Nasty smell, which completely disappears when the towel is rinsed with chlorinated tap water. It is a bacterial issue, but may not be coming from the tank itself.

Big lfs seem to have a distinct smell, is it the same as that?
