I am currently going through a fishless cycle with a low general hardness level of around 3-4 dH. I have been advised to install some crushed oyster shells to increase this level to an optimum range.

Before doing this I was wondering whether you can put too many oyster shells in? In other words, is there a recommended concentration per litre that people should be following? My aquarium has a capacity of 150 litres so how much (in grams/kilograms) of oyster shell should I be putting into my filter?

I also have a 1400 litre pond. Is it common to use oyster shells with ponds? If so how much should I install in the filter?

Mark.
