I've been looking at getting something a little different and found a fantastic shop in Central London that stock red crabs. Will they be okay with my community tank, see fish list below??????

In case you haven't guessed I'm a bit of a novice.

No they will attack all the fish cuz i know crayfish and lobsters will, And crabs are in the same family as them. So they will eat your fish. Sry.

FD is right. Crabs are scavangers and any small fish are fair game. If the fish are swimming in "free" water where the crabs can't get them that's fine, but your loaches and bristlenoses would be on dodgy ground. It is best to stay away from them, they should be kept as a species only, although they could be mixed with other robust crustaceans.

Another thing to consider is the needs of the crabs. True, fully aquatic freshwater crabs are rare. Most, including all that I have seen in the stores, must have surface access. They are escape artists, as well, but will die if not provided with this in the form of a floating platform, sturdy plants that break the surface, or a paludarium style setup. They typically live only 6-12 months in most tanks, simply because they do not have a reliable means of getting out of the water, so resort to climbing cords, and from the cords, they end up under furniture, dead.

They are cool, but combined with their tendency to grab fish (mostly at night, they will get even top swimmers this way), it's better to have a setup just for them, rather than mixing them in a community setup.

Thanks so much for the advice! I can't believe the guy in the fish shop said they'd be fine! Aquatics Design centre on Great Portland street would have had a lot to answer for if it wasn't for my nosey nature to find out more.

Thanks again

P.S Better change my name now

Bit off topic, but i hope you have a new home for your fish, as they will out grow your tank soon. Especially the clown loaches.

you have penguins in your tank? :/ What the heck are they? got ne pics, i didnt think you can have penguins in a tropical/freshwater tank lmao, any how, are they like dwarf penguins :p cos i dont think they would fit in your tank .

Well I have been contemplating getting a larger tank as I have filled this tank, I did read up on the amount of inches of fish allowed for my 24"x12"x12" tank (24) and I think that apart from my Common Pleco I should be okay.

Do you think otherwise??
