Hi everyone!

I have a 25 gallon tank. About 2 years ago (when I spent a lot less time learning about tanks before throwing pretty fish in), I put a male betta in my tank with some platys, neon tetras, corys and a giant plecostomus. The betta died after 8 months, and I could never figure out why (there was no fin damage or signs of fighting/stress between fish)
Now, I have platys, neon tetras, rummynose tetras, corys, 2 clown loaches and an african dwarf frog in my tank. There is a moderate amount of coverage from plants, and none of my fish are the slightest bit aggressive. I'm wondering what people's opinions are on whether this might be a good environment to try again with a male betta. I'm mostly concerned about the tetras because I've heard they tend to nip at fins. Have people had success with keeping bettas in community tanks? Thanks :)

i have had bettas with alot of different fish

neons
rasbora
white clouds
dwarf frogs
cherry shrimp
endlers
celebes rainbows
nerites

of course not all at the same time but really it all depends on the personality of the betta you end up with some are fine some (like my sisters) will tear anything apart you put in its tank (except snails)

so with bettas its alot of trial and error...

also they say bettas normally only like 2 to 3 years... and can be almost 6 to 8 months (if not older) then you purchase them so you last betta may have been older than you know and may have just been old...

hope at lease some of this will help...

One-This is WAYY to small for clown loaches as they get large and should be kept in groups of atleased 4-6
Two-I also think your ADF would appreciat a friend or two, IME they like to hang around the tank together
Three- Once you make sure your numbers are up and your clowns have a bigger tank I think it could work as long as the betta isnt to agressive and the tetras dont nip at his fins

To add to what the other have said, tetras will nip other fish if they aren't kept in groups of 6+. If you have enough tetras then he'll be fine in the tank.

Clown plecos can grow 6-12 inches and need a bare minimum of 55 gallons. Like the person above me said, they do best in groups.

I am completely aware of what size clown loaches can grow to. I adopted them from someone who was moving and giving away all their fish, and my tank is a temporary home until they can be moved to my cousin's much larger tank with his much larger clown loaches. As they are barely 1.5 inches at this point, I don't believe they are going to suffer in my tank for a few more months. Thanks so much for the unrelated advice though.

Hi,
I tried one female betta with a few platy and they stressed her out...also tried hasboras and the same happened. I guess the deal would be (IMO) is to have a back-up plan if the fish don't get along. Keep an eye on them and if the betta is having problems put him in his own tank. :) Good luck!
