Ok, I'm not sure how long is acceptable to keep fresh, slightly cooked vegetables in my tank to feed my otos, but after leaving a couple strips of zucchini clipped to the side of my tank overnight, I woke up to a tank with cloudy water. I had to get to work, so I didn't have time to check the water parameters and left the zucchini in there because there was still a couple of otos munching away on them.

Is this normal or does it mean that my tank is undergoing a bacteria bloom which will cause my tank to cycle again? How long is it safe to leave fresh vegis in my tank for the otos?

Hiya Fishlover, bacterial blooms have no effect on your filter bacteria. Bacterial blooms are often seen during the early stages of cycling but are not connected with it, they just happen to take place at the same time! They are only a nuissance and will cause no hard to your fish or your tank. As is the cure for just about everything, do a big water change!

From what I understand up to 24 hours is ok but I may be wrong. I've fed courgette to my fish once (they wanted nothing to do with it lol) but the next morning I saw it was covered in a foggy looking bacterial growth so I removed it.

All in all I don't think you've got much to worry about :)

WHEW! Thanks for the quick response. I asked my daughter to take it out of the tank as long as no other otos were feeding off of it and will do a water change tomorrow (busy tonight and typically do a water change on Fridays anyway).

I'm very relieved that no harm was done.

Thanks again!
