A'right folks,

i have seen a fish called a convict which i really like? are they hard to maintain and do they do well in a community?

bEAR! :-(

check this link to the fish index. You will need at least 30g for Convicts and they are notoriously aggressive. If you end up with a breeding pair then they will not just be aggressive but most likely kill every other fish in the tank!!
Not the best fish for a community tank then really!!

Like said, they don't do well in a common community tank. They eat all the small fish, dig up plants and try to kill everything else, just for fun. If you really wanna get convicts, go for a +30gal. species tank. They are charming fish, by themselves. ;)

A breeding pair of convicts makes a really nice tank BUT not a community tank. They are really amazingly aggressive when they are breeding. I have personally seen them take on oscars and win! A single convict might be okay in a large cichlid community but its a lot more fun to have a separate species tank for these guys.

I had a breeding pair of breeding black convicts and i got rid of them because they ate everything. THEN the fry decided to be little morons and pick on everything, they were only a inch long and already very teritorial....IMO they are no fun because you need all that space for them and they have to be by themselves...
