Convicts Breeding?

My male convict hides in his log all day and has dug most of the gravel out inside it until the glass bottom, I cannot see a female that is paired. Although one seems to swim more by him more than the others, Is it normally the female that will be inside and the male that guards the 'cave' so to say.

Or am i just seeing typical Cichlid nature of building a nest?

I am new to Cichlids so have never seen this behavior before.

You're correct. He's building a nest, after that the female will join him, lay eggs and take care of them while the male terrorizes everyone else.
