i am getting a 50 gallon tank for xmas and want to get a green terror i was just wondering before hand what are good tank mates for them being as though it will be a an aggressive tank maybe some other type of american cichlids ????

J.D, severums, convicts, oscars, these fish are compatible, however they are not compatable in a 50 gallon tank. this will be too small for such aggressive and large fish as these. they may be ok while the fish are still young but i dont think the tank would be large enough for their permanent home.
someone else will hopefully give you some more/ better advice shortly

What about a Blue Acara

i prefer the blue acaras but nowhere near me has them :( ... i really want an american cichlid tank aswell ill just look for some smaller fish i heard that the jewel cichlids are nice and not to aggressive

def not an acara, as you would most likely get major aggression with two similar species in such a small tank,
Jewels are africans and can be downright mean little guys, although they may work come to think of it? (A customer has 2 with her texas and they apparently hold their own very well)

what are the dimensions of the tank? your best bet would be to go with some kind of catfish, plec, or possibly bichir

The dimensions for a rio180 are
101 X 41 X 50cm

IMO you could be ok with a Firemouth, Convict and possibly even a Blue Acara in that tank if you add them all together when they are young, (if you could get them all female that would reduce aggression further)

GT's however are much bigger and would very much limit the stocking of the tank as you have already seen by the above responses.

cool i think i might add a single convict i dont want them breeding and killing everything else and then some firemouthes and if i can find a blue acara if not is there any alternatives

There are other alternatives but they tend to be rarer (blue acaras are very common and should be at the very least available to order from your LFS if you ask them?
alternatives include: sajicas, rainbow cichlid, Nicaragua cichlid, Honduran red point,

However not that 3 smaller cichlids are going to be your maximum stocking IMO, and even with 3 there is going to be a risk of real aggression coming into play once they mature
