Hi,

I am not sure if my fish has a problem or if this is relativly normal?

I have a two month old fantail goldfish. LFS told me it was an Oranda, but further investigation suggests it is a standard fantail goldfish or an Ryukin maybe? (egg shaped body?) (no Oranda like cap)

Ginger has started occasionaly trailing very clear strands of fish pooh. This is not after every meal and alternates between normal pooh and clear pooh.

In every other way he appears fit, healthy and active, as do his two Black Moor tank mates.

Is this normal, should I be worried?

thanks

i dont know anything that could help you.

but i do think that something is not right ... clear poo is never good

Does it float at all. as air trapped in the gut can come out as clear poo. I would be more worried if the poo was white and stringy

thanks for the feedback

He's been eating pelet food as normal, occasionally I give them chopped up cooked peas, which get them excited. The moors havn' been affected so don't think it's the food.

As for stringiness, a couple of times it was slightly stringy, it got caught on a leaf and looked like a very thin strip of wispy tissue paper (if that makes sense!)

I have been keeping a close eye on him and his behaviour is still very normal and no other apparent symptoms.

puzzled! :S

this happens with my orandas on occasion so i wouldn't worry too much. If you are feeding pellet, is it sinking or floating? If they are taking food off the surface they may very well be swallowing air as i generally only see this in mine on the occasions that they get flake or try to eat the bubbles from the aerator

also, orandas' caps don't really start growing until they're about 3 months, i think, so if it's young it may just not have started developing yet. Also genetics can affect the growth as well and a poorly bred fish may never develop its wen (cap)

If its long and stringy and thin then stress or not feeding well is likely.

If its thick and white then the insides of the gut are shedding white blood cells which means an infection, unless the fish is being fed white food.

Normal healthy poo is short and ddark or food coloured.

If its clear and zig zagged then its reabsorbed eggs.

If it has air/floats then its taking air from the surface. Also a diet high in fat can cause it to float.

Long trailing thick dark poo means its constipated so cut back on feeding and feed something like daphnia and peas for three days.

Thats all really usefull information, thanks everyone! :good: :good:

Starrynightxxi - thanks for the info re the wen on orandas, I will keep an eye out in case one does grow and will not panic too much! I assumed it would be there from birth

Blackangel - thanks for the "pooh diagnostics chart (tm)" I will hold onto this for furture reference.

As Ginger is otherwise healthy, I am suspecting surface feeding, as he sometimes goes for the pellets before they sink, thus taking on air.

thanks again for your reasurring info
