Good afternoon,

New to the aquarium hobby and I have a question about my tropical tank.

Over the last couple of weeks there had been a very slow build up of algae on the glass sides. Not much at all and almost invisible unless you caught it at the right angle. I`m dealing with the cause separately, but bought one of the magnetic scrubbers to remove the existing build-up. That seemed to work fine but immediately after doing so I noticed that the surface of the water is now covered in what looks like an oily substance. Previously it had been completely clear and I haven`t had any issues with it at all before now.

I'm guessing that it is the particles of algae from the glass walls which have been dislodged by the algae scrubber and they should now be filtered out by the filter? Or is it a separate problem which I need to deal with another way?

(Water parameters are all fine and I test daily at the moment while I get used to fishkeeping to make sure I don't miss anything)

Thank you!

Matt.
