Hi All,

We tried added a cleaner shrimp to the tank today - all water stats fine - thought temp is around 27/28deg now its got warmer here.

Acclimatised it by floating in tank for 15ish mins - then putting the water / shrimp in a bucket and dripping in water for 45mins roughly from the tank. netted the shrimpy, placed him in the tank - he swam off onto the rocks sat there for a while then just fell to the sand dead

Any ideas on what i did wrong or what went wrong

just read bunjiwebs reply in another thread in the nano section regarding fish water containing copper!

we bought the shrimp same time as a clown fish and basicaly acclimatised the 2 together - ie fish and shrimp and water in the same bucket - then dripping in..... now makes me wonder if there fish system did have copper in it and that poisoned mr shrimpy before he hit the tank :shout:

thought tbh - they never mentioned about copper in the system or not mixing them when acclimatising them.

:X

well, that probably is the reason, go and ask your LFS asap :good:

Most fish shops keep their fish only tanks treated heavily with copper. They should be responsible enough to inform customers of this and especially so if they sell a fish alongside an invert :grr:

If they do keep themincopper and never told you then you should demand your money back.

well myne is doing fine i love him great lil guy but, ive heard there are types of shrimp and inverts that cant be taken out of the water like a sponge, without dying, maybe a cleaner shrimp is the same thing, most i think can be tho cuz they are always beingpulled in and out of the water by people in the wild like when you fish n u catch one... but im not sure.... but once there in ther pretty hardy.

Yeah, sounds like you did a good job acclimating.

The stores always say acclimate them slowly they are sensitive to salinity changes. I've never drip acclimated any of my 5 shrimps (3 skunks and 2 fires) and they are doing awesome! I usually do a 30 minutes bag float and the 1/4 every 15 mintues 4 times then toss them in.

Maybe the salinity in the fish bag was different and it was to quick of a change when you put them in the drip bucket? Or like you said maybe the FO had copper.

Thanks for the reply Jen,

When I go back to that shop - maybe I will - maybe I won't :p - I will ask about there s.g. and copper use.

Maybe I will chalk it up to a stoopid newbie error and learn to buy 1 thing at a time and then properly quarrantine the fish etc - althought I do have a copper test kit now just to be sure of whats stored in what
:p

I would reiterate what i said in that other thread about the copper. The shop doesnt *have* to tell you they have copper in their fish system, some shops even be embarrassed to tell you so, however, it is very neglectful of them not to inform you of any copper in the system. I would ALWAYS acclimatise fish and inverts seperately, even if they appear to come from the same system.

If it died that quickly, it is unlikely to be water params, sg, temp etc. considering the way you drip-fed it etc, exactly as I would do things.

Ben

Just thought I would chuck an update in!
Got another 2 cleaner shrimpy's yesterday - and both acclimatised and were fine! So, seems like the tank is ok :p

Did get a shock this morning when i found a pale shrimpy body attached to the LR - and only 1 shrimp active - thought one died overnight - but both are active now, so one must have moulted/shed within 12hrs of being in the tank and then hid all morning!

Hopefully this is a sign of things being OK
