Hi! I just got new angels. Three juveniles and three adult veils. They all seem to be healthy and active but nearly all of them have clamped fins. Their fins were all extended fully when I first added them and kept the tank lights off for a whole day. Once the lights turned on however, they started clamping their fins. Some of them also spend a lot of time on the top corner of my tank but go down every now and then. They don’t seem to be sick and the water quality seems normal.

My ph is 8.0 n ammonia nitrites and nitrates are at 0. Is there any reason they could be suddenly clamping their fins? I still it because they’re still not used to the new environment? Thanks a lot!

Hi and welcome to the forum :)

Can you post pictures of the fish and the tank?

How long has the tank been set up for?

-------------------
TURNING LIGHTS ON AND OFF
Stress from tank lights coming on when the room is dark can be an issue. Fish don't have eyelids and don't tolerate going from complete dark to bright light (or vice versa) instantly.

In the morning open the curtains or turn the room light on at least 30 minutes (or more) before turning the tank light on. This will reduce the stress on the fish and they won't go from a dark tank to a bright tank instantly.

At night turn the room light on and then turn the tank light off. Wait at least 30 minutes (or more) before turning the room light out. This allows the fish to settle down for the night instead of going from a brightly lit tank to complete darkness instantly.

Try to have the lights on at the same time each day.

Thanks for the response!

The tank itself has been running for about three years already but I did a rescape last month and changed the substrate.

At first I thought that the fish had ich because of the white spots on their fins but it doesn’t seem to be spreading and from what I learned they’re scar tissues.

The tank itself is in a very well lit area so it gets some sunlight in the morning just before the timer turns the light on.

Beyond the clamped fins they seem to be very active😃 it took me a while to take pictures since they were following me everywhere. If it helps, their fins were also very open and spread out when they were in the store.

Thank you sm again for the response!😊😊

These were also the pictures from when they were still at the store. When I first put them in my tank they still had their fins fully extended

I would say there is something in the water irritating them and not a disease.

The white dots on the tail are interesting, but they don't look like white spot or any other disease. They could be calcium deposits in the fins or something else.

You can try doing a big water change and gravel clean every day for a week and see if it helps.
Make sure any new water is free of chlorine/ chloramine before it's added to the tank.

Maybe try wiping the white dots off the tail and see if they come off or stay put.

Thanks for the response! I did a water change and rearranged the wood so they have more hiding spots. I also added a few more Indian almond leaves to darken the water and try to reduce stress. They seem to be more confident now and they’ve also started fanning out their fins more 😃.

Idk if I should start another thread for this but I’m also wondering how I can grow the juvenile angels in my tank 😅 the store I bought from gave me a free baby fish and it’s only around 1.5cm. It seems to be getting along with everyone else but do you have any specific advice on growing fish? Thanks so much!

If there is just 1 baby fish with the others and it is fine currently, leave it there and feed it well.
