Just wondering if anybody has kept discus with geophagus? Would it work? Would add young fish to let them grow up together but .... thoughts?

Erm, I have seen it in a few tanks before but not 100% on it as I have not done it - the good things about the mix are 1. pristine water - both species thrive in it and 2. both pretty well matched in terms of aggression and 3. neither have the jaws of a predator so would not impose on each other.

Would need to research the water temps of Geos, but the ones I have seen mixed are the Red Head Tapajos but it could have just been a "posers" tank to which I mean they put the fish in the tank because they look good not because they do well together but they were very healthy so not sure....

A friend of mine keeps Geos with Discus. Not sure of the exact species.

Seems to work for him.

Cheers, I have young G sp pindare which I believe seem to be smaller, more peaceful than most and temp wise should do ok but maybe somebody out there has actual info?

Ouch my pride.... but I know what your saying, for what its worth though I think you will be okay. Pindare are an awesome Geo :) do you have any pics? Really wish they were more widely available and stop this Surinimensis hybrid floating about.

Sorry Willis and thanks for the reply. Didn't mean it like that, was just wondering if anybody had kept pindare with discus def not aimed at your comment  Like you, no idea why you don't see them more of them about, great fish.

I read that Geos dont produce hybrids even in the same genus.

There are quite a few examples out there - its generally things like Abalios, Discrozter and Altifrons - I think the typical signs are weak patterning, inconsistent tail markings and stress bars merge.

Ah right i suppose because those things are pretty much the same fish its possible, just wouldnt be possible for Jurupari x Brasiliensis etc

No not with that far away - give it a couple of years and Brasiliensis wont be a Geophagus any more - Jurupari is already a Satanoperca as well so its quite a different split of fish to your regular Geo. But as to how close they can cross breed Im unsure Ive not heard of red head tapajos cross with altifrons etc.

Thats a bit why I wish more true strains of Geos were available as then people can make intelligent choices with getting things like the Pindare that stay quite small and avoid the bigger species like Altifrons.

That said no geos are really for an impulse buy.

Wills :)
