I was hoping to get some form of dither fish in my 55gal krobia tank to help them feel that they can make an appearance more often. The tank looks empty anytime anybody in the room moves

So I'd like some chums for them, preferably something of a shoaling group which obviously immediately makes me think tetras of some form. But which ones?????

Now I like cardinals for the idea that they are smaller and I could have a slightly larger shoal (which really is the main thing on my mind) but then will they all just get eaten when I aren't looking?

Any other suggestions on nice shoaling fish? South american preferably..
:good:

I had them with Lemon Tetras :) I think that any of those body shapes or the disk shapes should work - stuff like Xray, Dawn, Pretty, Bentosi? A school of the black Emperors would look pretty nice against them :)

Tell you what actually, if you want something interesting for their tank - splash tetras! I was at Pier Aquatics today (nearish your area I think?) and they had some in, one set was really expensive at £38 per pair but they had some really similar ones at £15 per pair - nice different surface dwelling tetra and these were really really big I mean like about 3 inches! Could be interesting addition to the tank?

An other option would be to do a Xingu biotope? The Krobia are from there and since its dried out now it might be interesting to create a mini version with these?

I have found these guys need lots of cover, my 2 are lots better now and do come out when I am near the tank, however if I am wearing a blue t-shirt or jumper they go bonkers and hide  I havnt bothered with dithers, but I did put 4 of my very confident rotkeil babies in with them, that brought them out a bit, but they grew too, so I am going to put some smaller rotkeils I have in with them.

Thanks for the help, hopefully I can find something that I like that works for them.

Do you think that Corys would be too skittish to keep in the tank with them?

Are there any other nice smaller catfish that may work with them in a tank this size?

Cant help you on corys I dont actually keep them, I have had them in the past given to me from tank shutdowns etc, but I usually re-home them. I have found with my Krobia anything that moves suddenly or too fast sends them into a skitty fit round the tank. I have 2 black khuli loach in with my 2 at the moment (got a knock on the door and them handed too me) they are quite ok with them if you are after a bottom feeder.

I'm really stuck

I keep trying to picture different types of tetras in with them and just can't think of any that would compliment them. This could be time consuming and expensive

I gave up on keeping small fish with good size cichlids. Every time I do I'm left with 2 fast ones and all the other go missing. when they are young its fine but a 4" or 5" fish can take down a lots of small fish other time.
