I will make a totally aquatic environment for him, but firstly I would like to get a second newt. I'd rather get a second newt and then make an aquatic environment. Currently I have 3 rocks in the tank forming hiding holes and a "cave" in the middle; my little newt seems to 'sleep' in there.

yep, i would always suggest two min. remember to give 5 gallons per frog.

I did originally want two; unfortunately the shop had 3 left and the woman in front of me wanted two...she didn't even know what they were GRR I wasn't impressed the shop sold her them when she didn't even know what they were or have the tank set up or know what they ate. At least I can say I did research and had the tank set up before I got him.

There are only two shops which sell them, neither got them in this week; I'll have to wait until Thursday and Friday to call again to see if they got more delivered.

Well an update; I managed to locate another one. This time a little girl. In the shop she was on the "land" in my tank she's went for the land; although she is hidden in a cave on land - however the cave has a little water in the bottom of it.

She seems a little smaller than the other one so I think she may be younger; I'll keep a close eye on them for the next couple of days.

Isaac (first newt) is still happily stomping around the bottom of his tank.

how i tell if mine is male or female? i heard something about the tail.

http://newt150.tripod.com/photos.shtml If you look on the photos on there you can kind of see the differences in tails. It's hard to explain without seeing the photos. I can draw it but I don't know how to put it on here...

The females tail seems to continue in a straight line from their bum (for want of a better word) - it just seems to continue down in a straight line slope; where as at the bum the males tails go up - they look like a paddle and their tails are really thin...The males are also said to have a swolen bit at the bottom of their tails.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dipsydoodlenoodle/3945447196/ That is my male newt - it's not very good but it shows off the shape of his tail best.

I have another newt but I am unsure if it's male or female; it's tail is shaped like a female but it has swolen bits at the base of it's tail like a male (I'm not bothered what it is; I'd just like to know. lol)

the only "real" differences are:
1, a "bump", on the male, where the tail meets the abdomen. (underside). sexual maturity, has a large effect on how obvious this is.
2, Females, providing they are well fed and healthy, are larger, possibly, more rounded.

the sexing of "japanese Firebellys", though, exhibit, similar traits. to the above. but, males have longer toes. and during the breeding season, exhibit colour change. grey/blue. specifically, on the tail.

I think i see like small bumps as a human tan color...is that it? Im assuming mine is a male. I also read up that when there ready to breed the bumps are extremely visible. Is it usual to see your newt sticking on the wall like 8 inches above the floor?

Would a Japanese and Chinese Firebelly newt fight? I still prefer a Chinese so I can get a female and get eggs.

Mine don't; the lady from http://newt150.tripod.com/photos.shtml mixes her japanese and chinese newts together.

I'd have liked one of each sex HOWEVER they are such high demand that I had to drive miles away to find a second one.

I have read that newts will be hard to breed; however I have also read they are easy to breed.

IF they breed you need to remove the eggs as soon as you see them and put them in a different tank; when they hatch you need to make sure the tank is set up properly and that you feed them daily and provide land for them as they don't really like the water until they are a few years old. Did I also read that newts can have between 30-100 eggs (you'd have to confirm that) - I'd like to try breeding- however I don't have the facilities or space to take care of a whole load of babies. You need to remove the eggs because the parents will eat the eggs and baby newts.

Can you get a photo of your newt so we can try and sex it?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dipsydoodlenoodle/3944678115/ That is my Chinese newt; it has "bumps" at the base of the tail if you look closely; you can see them better on this photo but it's not as good http://www.flickr.com/photos/dipsydoodlenoodle/3945459808/.

I, honestly don't know. as they need different environments, completely. personally i would not keep them together. be warned though, one bite, can, and will kill. depends if you want to take the chance. only the japanese newt will survive, long periods, at tropical tempritures, though.

Hey,ever since this morning my newt has been hiding in the plants. Hes moving for sure, but hes not coming out. I'll update and tell whats next.

That is my tank set up

http://www.flickr.com/photos/dipsydoodlenoodle/3944669361/

I've lowered the water at the minute, but it's almost the same; it's got about 4-5 inches of water in it. My tank is only 12x12x12" at the moment. I will get bigger as they get bigger though.

I couldn't tell if your newt was male or female from the photo sorry. But he/she looked nice :)

My japanese newt goes through phases of hiding in the plants, under the rock, in the rock, under the filter...
