I'm doing a water change on one of my tanks right now and it is fascinating the random things I am finding in the gravel. Hair things, Dora the Explorer, a plastic horse, barbie shoes, etc. Now this concerns me for two reasons: This is an oscar tank and Dora should not be eaten (for either of their sakes) and who knows what these things might be leeching into the water.

I'm not looking for parenting tips here, but are there any things to "lock" the lid designed for that purpose or not?

I don't understand this child because it's only this tank. The oscar in my bedroom she's scared of, but the bettas and my goldfish tank seem like they'd be fair game. Maybe when this fish is full grown he'll be scary too.

How old are your kids anyway, before I give you further advice.

i know you can get "child locks" for cupboards that simply stick to cupboard doors and prevent them from being opend my weak child hands, perhaps theese could be used to lock the lid down? check your local kiddy shop, or diy shop for such devices
or even drilling 2 holes in the lid and a padlock....

pad lock idea will prob be ur best idea.my mom had to do that for the fridge for me

It's my daughter doing it, who's three. This tank sits on a coffee table with about an eight inch ledge that she will stand on and put stuff in.

That's a good idea with the stick-on ones, I'll have to look and see what I can find.

put a great white shark in there that will keep her away from the tank  :p

or tell her u put something that will shock her if she touches the lid and get suttin big and mechanical looking and put it next to ur tank

Well personally I'd make it so your daughter couldn't reach the tank.

or een if you can get hold of large magnets (god knows where from) stick onr to the lid and one to the inner lid?

As a mom of a 4 year old, I feel for ya!

I guess I'd try one of those fridge locks, where it goes on with double tape. Maybe two of them, one on each side of the lid. But anything you do will likely be a bit of an eye sore.

3 sounds like a good time to institute timeouts for doing it. Or, 'Toy timeout' which is what works best in my house.

Does she LOVE Dora? Would it have an effect if she were not to be returned to her?

Best of luck!!!

velcro-ing the child to the wall isn't going to work fishfishfish how heartless of you to suggest it

my 5 year old thinks that if she puts things in the tank the fish will die!!!!!which is kinda true is it not????????I told her that fish have teeth as well and they are usually very hungry. It worked with her she says shes only allowed to touch the tank if mum or dad are there :D

velcro a child............sounds like a fascinating game to play ha!ha!

My five year old thinks the same thing, and that's how he alerts me too "Sister's killing the fish! She's killing them with the elephants!"
