hi,
i am thinking of buying a 350L ish tank soon and would love to keep cichlids. I've been having a look and i like green terrors and oscars, are these two species ok together. also are corys and neon tetras ok with these fish?
Another option would be too get some more predatory fish like snakeheads or birchirs would these be fine?
Thanks
Lloyd

These two particular fish you mentioned will not be suitable with the likes of Neon's and Cory's unfortunately. Oscar's will see them as food in no time, and Green Terrors in my opinion will be to aggresive, hence the name 'terror'

BUT...!

There are plenty of Cichlid's you can keep in a community tank of that size. Just a few example's would be Keyhole's, Apistogramma, Ram's, Kribensis, Firemouths, Festivum, Angel fish, Discus, Checkerboard Cichlid.

There is a few that will be suitable. From a personaly experiance, I keep Apisto's and Keyhole's with Cardinal's and have kept Ram's and Kribensis with Tetra's.

Hope I helped :good:

James.

As James posted Cory/Tetra are normally a tad small and eaten by such fish as GTs and Oscars, if you wanted to keep bigger cichlids such as GTs or Oscars you'd want bigger dithers such as syno cats or silver dollars etc

I've seen polys in with cichlids, not sure if snakeheads / birchirs would be a problem though

I have sengal birchirs in with oscars, not a problem.

Poly's will be fine with most cichlid's and can take somewhat of a beating from the larger agressive cichlid's without too much actual damage (although its not very nice) . As long as the poly isnt small enough to look like a worm to a big cichlid or the bichir cant see the cichlid as food you'll be mostly fine. I have 8/9 poly's in with an oscar and a couple of midas without any problems.

thanks for the replys,
i do want a green terror and an oscar
what would be ideal tank mates for these?

in a 350l i'd say you're pushing it when the fish mature and get to a decent size. You could get a few of the smaller secies in bichir's in there or go for some sort of barb or danio . I have 8 Tin Foils and they're amazing to watch in a good shoal, tin foils will be to big for your tank but tey're all similar :) Avoid Tiger barbs though.

I be wary t put an adult oscar with a green terror in a tank that big, Also you have to think of their adult size, and a conventional 300L isnt 'that' big. For the simple fact they are cichlids and terrors can be real terrors i'd be reluctant to keep the two together, GT's are something else when they want to be a nuisance to tank mates. I have 2 9" Oscars in a 320L and it looks a little on the small side, i'd go with more of the smaller cichlids if you wish to keep a mixture, certainly a 5ft+ minimum for the 8"+ cichlids ideally.

There are plenty of interesting cichlids that you could mix that have just as much personality, if not more yet remain smaller and thus can have more in that size tank. A few have already been mentioned, such as firemouths, kribs, appistos. Even a shoal of big angels looks majestic, certainly if you get nicely coloured ones and not the horribly spangled mutations.

Certainly look at adult sizes and temperament before you go mixing juvi's cichlids together. Just because they grow up together doesnt mean they won't dislioke each other as they mature. When big cichlids fight, it gets messy and brutal!

hi thanks for the reply.
is there any fish i could keep with a green terror?
Severum's also look prety nice what are they like with other fish?
kribs are cool but i would prefer new world cichlids (i think  )
angel fish have never really caught my eye they are a bit common
i do like the look of discus but i here they are alot of work
Aren't appistos dwarf cichlids?
Thanks again
Lloyd
