i currently have a tank that is 36 length, 15 width and 18 high (inches)

it holds axolotls but i am going to sell these and get tropical fish instead.

i worked out that my tank is 266 litres but if someone can confirm this then that would be great,

i also saw on a heater chart on ebay that i would need a 300w heater. but this seems a little high.

i have an eheim 2236 filter which i think should be ok. ive just bought new media etc so when i sell my axolotls i will get in cycled and up and running.

Your tank is only about 150litres.
To work out the volume of water in your tank
multiply the length x width x height in cm
divide by 1000
equals volume in litres.

When you measure the height measure from the top of the gravel to the top of the water level. If you have any big rocks or driftwood in the tank then remove them before measuring the height.

A 150 or 200w heater would be fine for the tank.

No need to add new filter media to the Eheim. Just do a 75-80% water change using dechlorinated water and put the heater in the tank. When the temp is up to scratch add the new tropical fish. The bacteria in the filter are exactly the same in cold or warm water.
