Does anyone know what running activated carbon in the filter will do as far as removing plant nutrients?

Carbon filtration is believed by some aquarists to remove some of the TDS (total dissolved solids), but in planted tanks this is also going to remove much-needed nutrients like DOC (dissolved organic carbon) which are essential to maintain the plants and they can help with TDS.

You're better off just replacing it with another layer of biological or mechanical filter.

Remove the carbon form the filter and replace it with a sponge (as suggested by sharkweek178).

Carbon will remove aquarium plant fertiliser and carbon isn't needed in most aquariums.
