can south and central American cichlids be kept together? and show me your setups.

As above really and a few more Q's. Im closing my 6x2x2 down and going central American cichlid's.
What sort of stocking levels can I have?
Is it best to keep all males all females or both?
Is there anything I should avoid?
And any other tips you experts can think of.
