can i keep FW mussels?

can i keep them in a 10 gal tank? there r plenty in my river and in a tank that small should not get more than 2". would a mussel just be a filter feeder? i really want to get one when i get my 10 gal. there fun to watch when they move and help the levels of nitrates be lower. me and my friend used to keep them in his tank but they died easily due to we had no heater and other essiantle equipment.
