Hello. I've heard that if you keep a bunch of female convicts together with no males, they'll give themselves a sex change operation, but they can't reproduce. Is this true or another stupid theory?

Marine Clownfish can but never heard of a convict doing it.

You may get one that starts to act as a 'sub male', which basically is where the fish acts as a male. Angels do it if kept in groups. One of the females will show signs of male behaviour, especially if one of the females is spawning. Another fish will simulate fertilization as if she was a male. Obviously nothing happens to the eggs. I think some other cichlids do this too. Maybe that is what you're thinking of?! hth.
