Hi! I was given this fish from a friend who couldn't care for him, and was told it was an African Cichlid. However, she didn't know what kind of Cichlid it was. Is anyone able to ID him/her for me?

Also, the dude is tinyyyyy like maybe a little more than an inch, inch and a half. My ph rn is around 7.3, don't know if that's good for him, either. He's in a temporary extra 15g by himself right now.

I have multiple tropical community tanks, but don't really have any experience with cichlids, so any help would be appreciated!

Looks like a juvenile Mbuna cichlid from Lake Malawi. As to the actual species, it needs time to grow and colour up before we can ID it properly. @Wills is a cichlid person who might be able to tell but I think it is an unknown until it gets bigger.

Most Mbuna cichlids are highly territorial and will kill things that get in their way so be careful who you keep it with.

They need a pH above 7.6 and a GH around or above 300ppm.

Like Colin said its hard to identify when they are that young. My best bet seems to be Pseudotropheus johannii. I have a couple in my tank. This is not 100% though.

I could be wrong but looks to me like a Johanni, has also similar fins to a yellow lab. Could be a hybrid between these two species. Defo mbuna though
